Q is the letter for the day! Queens!

Queens have reigned in many countries for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth II in England, Mary, Queen of Scots, and then we had the Visigothic queens who were only named as such because they were married to kings.

Queen Elizabeth has always been my favorite. She ruled for 44 years, by herself (meaning no King), was called the Virgin Queen, and the Elizabethan Era was named for her. Elizabeth took over after her sister, who was called “Bloody Mary” due to the executions she ordered of 300 Protestants that refused to change over to Catholic died,  and had to try and undo all the damage she did. Queen Elizabeth reinstated the Church of England and had them make a common prayer book, stating “There is one Jesus Christ, the rest is a dispute over trifles” which got her excommunicated by Pope Pius V in 1570.  She managed to stop the war with France and stayed out of conflict with them and Spain til 1585 when she had to go against Spain when they went after the Netherlands and then they tried to fight England, but lost due to England’s superior Navy. She then had to go up against her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, who wanted the throne. In 1567 Elizabeth had Mary jailed for suspicion of assassination attempts, kept her imprisoned almost 20 years and then had her executed in 1587.

She loved the arts. The artistic community flourished while Elizabeth reigned. During this time is when Shakespeare and Marlowe came about. The poet Edmund Spenser based his character of Gloriana in The Faerie Queen on Elizabeth, and she was sometimes referred to by this name.

Queen Elizabeth drew her final breath on March 24, 1603, at Richmond Palace in Surrey. With her death came the end of the house of Tudor, a royal family that had ruled England since the late 1400s. The son of her former rival, Mary Stuart, succeeded her on the throne as James I.
